Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

No, it's a regular word in that regard.

#

Same with mouton and other words like that.

plural of poisson

lofty perch
flat spindle
#

Wiktionary is good for checking plurals/gendered forms

#

Google translate is consistently unreliable, especially for single words

ahhh ok thanks hahaha XD

#

ok but now I have another question:

#

so this answer is correctly apparently, but since fish is a countable noun, shouldn't it also be plural here?

lofty perch
#

"fish" can be both countable and uncountable. When it's countable, it refers to the animal.
When it's uncountable, it refers to the meat.

#

"Il y a des poissons dans cet aquarium" --> countable
"Il y a du poisson dans cette quiche" --> uncountable

flat spindle
#

There are fish (countable) vs. there is fish (meat, uncountable)

bruh XD

#

ok thanks hahaha

#

now I'm questioning what other weird holes I have in my english because even though it's my native language I don't speak it at home XD

#

So technically you could also say "Do you buy fish (countable) at the supermarket?" right? Like in the case of "wholesale" fish

#

If so, does that mean "Tu achètes des poissons au supermarché ?" is also correct?

lofty perch
#

“Tu achètes des poissons?” means “do you buy (a bunch of) fish?”
As in multiple fishes 🐠 🐠

#

That is indeed something you can say

flat spindle
#

It sounds like you're buying live fish but yeah

#

If you're talking about a whole fish used for meat you usually still are referring to the meat

#

You can compare with chicken vs chickens for an easier time seeing the difference
