Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

opposer quelque chose à quelqu'un = présenter quelque chose à quelqu'un comme une contradiction ou une objection

So basically it means "to refute someone"

She neither mentions the enemy-like silence of nature nor the harsh demand of a reciprocal acknowledgement to refute him.

By not mentioning those things she stayed silent instead of refuting him, but she was thinking them.

Does that fit the context?

Huh not really, I’m really not sure what the lui is in this context. Can I send the full text? It’s pretty short

"lui" would be the man she's talking to, but yes the whole text might help

oof, it's like all of that was purposely worded in the most confusing way possible.

Let's hope someone with more literary knowledge can jump in.

The excerpt seems to be saying that she does not represent either of the two things for him but something that is between them.

#

Nature étrangère = silence ennemi
Semblable trop identique = dure exigence d'une reconnaissance réciproque
And we have intermédiaire to note something between these two sides.

Like I just don’t understand elle ne lui oppose ni le silence..

#

She doesn’t oppose him? She doesn’t oppose neither the enemy silence nor the harsh demand?

#

If someone could directly translate that would be really helpful

Opposer is basically put someone in the face of something. There's the idea of pitting someone against something. The woman doesn't do that so the man doesn't have to face them but something that acts as an intermediary between them. Something that isn't the enemy silence but not the demand of reciprocity either.

More or less, yes.
