Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
“Essayer” takes a “de” before an infinitive verb.
J’ai eu beau essayer de le convaincre
Also I feel like mixing the passé composé with the imparfait is a bit strange here. I think either you put both verbs in the passé composé or both in the imparfait, depending on what you’re trying to express.
does it make sense to conjugate in the imparfait with avoir beau?
lawless french is a bit vague there
Yes it does.
J’avais beau essayer, je n’y arrivais pas.
No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t do it.
In the imparfait it implies you tried and failed multiple times
thanks!
