Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
if you need to stress the fact that you walked to school, then i think the best way is "je suis allé à l'école à pied", "j'ai marché à l'école" is a correct sentence i think (@natives correct me if i'm wrong) but it doesn't sound very natural to convey what you mean
oh i just noticed that you said "i walk to school" is "j'ai marché à l'école", if you mean to express that habit it's just "je marche à l'école"
either way, for the passé composé you use it to describe actions that had a clear beginning and end in the past, if you're just describing things in the past you use the imparfait: "j'ai vu de beaux paysages là-bas" ---> you went somewhere and you saw nice landscapes while you were there, clear beginning and end
"je voyais de beaux paysages" ---> this conveys more the meaning that in the past you lived somewhere and you regularly saw cool landscapes, so there's not a clear beginning and end
You're right, ''j'ai marché à l'école'' is like saying ''I walked at school'' doesn't make much sense, right?
Another sentence that could be used, though it's more complicated, would be ''Je vais à l'école en marchant'' (mostly used for a habit).
The past form of this would be ''Je suis allé/e à l'école en marchant'' (I walked to school)..
Most people would use a time indicative in this sentence. Ex: Hier (yesterday), je suis allé/e à l'école en marchant. That wouldn't represent a habit, but an exception to your usual routine.
(I guess it depends on the context, as always)
There's another possible sentence but imma leave this one to other natives, as I'm not sure if it would be okay to use it (depends on the context, again) : J'ai marché jusqu'à l'école.
According to me, it draws too much attention to the distance the person walked.. Not sure tho
