Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Probably best to avoid it until you're comfortable with the usage. It's somewhat comparable to calling a female dog a "bitch" in English - you can, and some people do, but in the wrong context you might attract some snickers or confusion

I think they just mean they were taught that nobody uses it, but they're hearing people use it in normal conversation

I've wondered about this too, and whether it's fine to just call a female dog "chien" to avoid the problem

I believe chienne is a bit more connotated in quebec
