Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

ça va et toi

heavy skiff

(I'm probably overthinking lol)

#

yeah the "et" is higher in pitch

#

or both "et toi" are higher in pitch

heavy skiff
#

Or maybe intonation is just part of having an accent and I don't need to worry about it much

#

the only way to tell if it's natural is to make a voice message for us hehe

#

but I think you do are overthinking

#

idk if you heard it but french is not a language where intonations are important

rain tapir
#

Just wanna make clear that I'm not a pro of pronunciation, I don't know the phonetic system. Just a random french tryna help

It's just to make it more natural and smoother

because in some languages like english it's important and can change the meaning of the sentence

rain tapir
#

Ahahaha it's fine, it's just that people are used to ask and learn the intonation

#

But in french only the pronunciation is important

heavy skiff
#

That's true though. For asking questions, we can sometimes use intonation alone in English, but (it seems like) intonation is the most common way to turn indicatif into a question in French

rain tapir
#

That's why french people sound so monotone in foreign languages and it's SO HARD to learn a "singing" language (I'm learning Chinese and it's horrible)

#

Intonation is important mostly for questions and sarcasm, I don't think of any other really important use

heavy skiff
#

so going up on the word "et" in ça va et toi is surprising to me

rain tapir
#

The 2 possibilities I can think of

#

Et toi going up

Et going up

heavy skiff
#

here's how I have been saying it until now:

rain tapir
#

The second one sounds like you just ask it to be polite, you don't rly ask for any further informations on if they are doing alright ahhahaha

#

Yeah that's good !

heavy skiff
rain tapir
#

Ahahaahah yep

#

But 99.9999% we just say "ça va"

#

Or ULTIMATELY "ça va ça va"

Ahhahahah yeah yeah I understand, pronunciation is really the hardest thing when learning a language

#

But I think listening to natives is really the best thing, you'll get it with time
