I'm not 100% sure what the exact meaning being used here is, but that is at least the general sense of what he's saying

this expression is mostly used like this "mes jours sont comptés" -> meaning I am going to die soon

so he's basically saying that the monkeys are lucky that they have to keep their ammunitions, otherwise he would've shot them
