Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
First of all' quelque chose' is two words. As for quotes or speech: yes, French uses « » in place of "" or ''. I'm sure MS Word has a setting somewhere, assuming it doesn't automatically correct your quotation marks.

<< >>
《 》
" "
« »

<< >>
《 》
« »
" "
In France, their keyboard doesn't have « » (though other french regions generally do) so it's not unusual to use " "
I didn't expect that, interesting.
What about single quotation marks, like those used in British English?
Though in formal stuff « » is used yes
Also, quotes within quotes can use "
E.g. « Il m'a dit "oui" »
Idk about ' I haven't really seen them used in french but their usage is a bit specific
But yeah don't use << >>, if you don't have guillemets just use " "
« guillemets are fun tho »
Nice, that's a similarity we share, then. :D
I tested each and every combination on my keybaord. and found it. as you might've seen me typing her for a long time.
yes you're absoutely right, word does autocorrect it from "" to «»
for me, it was right alt key + [ / ]
windows 10 (US international keyboarkd setting)
regardless, I'm glad I asked now I know more about stuff I didn't know like the usage of "" and the lack of guillemets in French keyboards.
and yeah single quotation marks are pretty specific, my friend tole me something like 'they're really only used when you're paraphrasing'
Thanks you two. I really appreciate it!!
For the future if you need to find a key https://kbdlayout.info/ is great
Find everything you ever needed about keyboard layouts - scan codes, virtual keys, shift states, dead keys, ligatures, flags, history, Unicode. Plan keyboard shortcuts and type text in different layouts.
The keyboard used in France lacks a lot of features of the french language, ironically
Like, you can't type capital accented letters for example
Or œ
Even with "caps lock", as they don't actually have a caps lock, they have a shift lock, and shift + accented key is generally just a number
