#Gender of unknown person/object

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Will there be cases where you and another person have different opinions on what an object is, so you end up referring to it as different pronouns (le vs la)?
@lost lake all objects have gramatical gender. so you would have to learn it, there is no one object without it. IN THE RARE OCCASION that it is a thought, a guess etc, the default is il/le
as for people the default is 'il' (he), HOWEVER some people USE 'iel' as their pronoun, that is a pormanteau of il and elle. THIS IS NOT FOR UNKNOWN GENDER, this is solely for people who use iel.
everything is agreed.
Not that you disagree on what gender an object is, but you simply can't be sure what the object is
you would use il/le
X: Alex va arriver dans quelque minutes
Y: IL prends le train ou le bus?
here alex could be any gender
and it just takes the first speaker to correct them if alex doesnt use il
X: Non, elle conduit
just like in mandarin, we use 他 in writing if unknown
all it takes is someone to correct to 她 ;)
How about babies or animals? Can you ask by saying "c'est un garçon ou une fille?"
yeah
or again the parent/owner can correct you if you mess up
X: C'est ton bébé? Il est mignon~!
Y: Oui, c' est une fille, elle s'appelle Marie, et oui elle est mignonne
X: C'est ton chat?
Y: Ouais c'est ma chatte, elle est très fatigue toujours
For bébé, you can say either ton bébé or ta bébé, correct?
non, like how personne is always feminine, bébé it is always masculine
regardless of gender
Then should I say "Ton bébé est très mignon" or "mignonne", if I know it's a girl?
mignon to agree with bébé
I see, so grammatical gender takes precedence over biological gender
yes
gendered adj always takes the gender of the noun its agreeing to
it only agrees with the persons gender if the noun also reflects such
une fille mignonNE
un garçon mignoN
un bébé (regardless) mignon
une personne mignonne
Ok, but say if I am to rephrase "ton bébé (une fille) est très mignon" to "ton bébé est une jolie fille!" then the adj agrees with the "fille" instead of "bébé"?
the parts before and after être don't have to agree
Ok I see. I think the dots are connected for me
as jolie is agreeing with fille, we can disregard bébé
awesome
lmk if you have any questions
Merci beaucoup!
不用客氣😇

one addition, the default il is in french outside of people/obj. the concepts of 'it' in english is il, it's 3 o'clock (il est 3 heures), it's cold (il fait chaud), it's raining (il pleut)

Oh no, take some rest! This question can wait.
如果我知道你在熬夜回答我就明天再回了😂放下手机再试着睡会儿吧。
