Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Sounds to me like a room with lots of curtains hung?
thank you
Basically what Bertie said.
Concordance des temps with the subjunctive depends more on the main verb
what does that mean
like why not que maman ne soit pas morte
or que maman ne fût pas morte
It would be if we were using modern French but in literary French if the main verb is in the conditional then the present/future would be the subjunctive imperfect, the past would be the subjunctive pluperfect
« J’aurais préféré que … »
Literary French:
During/After -> « … maman ne mourût pas. »
Before -> « … maman ne fût pas morte. »
Modern French:
During/After -> « … maman ne meure pas. »
Before -> « … maman ne soit pas morte. »
ahh that makes sense now
thank you for writing that up
do u have a resource or link that elaborates on this
if not thank you
