Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

How to ask What questions

Quel/Quels/Quelle/Quelles - What (NOUN)

  • (What car? Quelle voiture?)
  • also can be used to express suprise (WHAT A CAR! QUELLE VOITURE!)
  • This follows the gender of thre noun/plural you are using
Quoi - What (on its own)
  • "You want some tea?" "Tu vuex du thé?"
  • (Hm? What?) (Hein, quoi?)
Qu'est-ce que [subject...] - What [subject...]
  • Qu'est-ce que tu fais? - What are you doing
  • Qu'est-ce qu'il mange? - What is he eating

Ignore the others for now, if you just started.

Quel(les) + être for "what is" when it's a choice (what is your favourite x)
Que + inversion

#

Quoi tends to be in at end of a sentence, but not always. Pretty sure it's exclusively an object pronoun? Que can be a subject pronoun (Que faire pour x...)

#

Remember that there are 3 different ways of formatting a question in french:
Inversion (Que veux-tu?) - formal
Est-ce que (Qu'est-ce que tu veux?) - neutral
Intonation (Tu veux quoi?) - informal

Qu'est-ce qui sert à acheter des produits?
this is a kinda tricky construction but simpler than it looks
the first que/qui determines if it is a subject (does the action - qui) or an object (receives the action - que). Here we are asking what "serves" this purpose, not what is "being served" this purpose, so it is a subject
the second qui/que determines if it is a person (qui) or something else (que). I assume we're not asking WHO is used for buying things, so it is something else

#

I'm not sure if I'd use any other question form for that one specifically, not even sure how I'd pull that off tbh

#

Que sert à acheter des produits?
C'est quoi qui sert à acheter des produits?

there we go
