Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

french only has one present tense, but is used for both the simple and continuous:

Je vais = I go /I am going

with past tense, if you want "was -ing", then you use the imperfect tense:

J'ai mangé = I have eaten/ate
Je mangeais = I was eating

However, there is a phrase you can use(en train de) which emphasises you are in the middle of doing something:

Je suis en train d'aller au restaurant -> I am going (in the middle of going) to the restaurant

You're missing être in « être en train de X » but yes that's correct. Just to add, you can use it in other forms as well (J'étais en train de manger quand un rat est venu dans le restaurant) but in general 90% of the time it's going to be présent (if present continuous) and imparfait (if past continuous); there are other continuous tenses in English but they're usually context-dependent.
