I can't find any sources that can confirm the passer à la pommade thing, but
To me, it sounds maybe nonstandard? But I don't think it's wrong?
"Le passait de la pommade" would make no sense tho

Whenever an adjective qualifying a noun is in the relative clause, de is added before it.
Ce qu'il y a d'étrange, etc.
