Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
I think word reference may have most of the translations ?
but can someone explain better than that how i can use them in different contexts?
i’ve already seen websites but it would be easier from a person explaining it to my face
@unique jewel actually you can't use the verbe "crocheter" as practicing crochet 🧶
You can just say "faire du crochet", ou "j'ai fait/fabriqué ceci au crochet"
The verb crocheter has another sense, it's mostly used when someone uses a needle for example (not necessarily a needle btw), to open a locked door "le voleur a crocheté la porte pour rentrer"
crocheter is mostly used to describe picking a lock?
so if i wanted to say ‘im crocheting’ what would i say
or ‘i crochet’
Yes
Je fais du crochet
and ‘i crochet’? like i run, i cook, i read..
No it doesn't exist
so if someone asks what i like to do for fun or a hobby, would i just say the word crochet?
kinda like we do in english?
thats knitting
wait is that in canada fr or eu french
also i thought they said that doesnt exist? like i couldn’t say ‘i __’ in french??
Damn, my bad. Thx
wait no come back thats not a yes or a no to that 😭😭
I don't really understand
Tricoter is not the same
You can say je tricote but it's not the same as doing crochet
Doing crochet is with a crochet (I think it was pretty obvious) whereas tricoter is with 2 needles
ghosty said this
this
thx !!!
which looks like ‘i knit’ or im assuming tricotte could be replaced with another activity like run or walk
right?
so which is it
no the tricotte isnt the problem
What's wrong 😭
its can i just slap ‘je’ in front of an activity like knitting, crocheting, running to say ‘i knit’ like ‘je tricotte’
ghost said no u said yes
so which 😭
you can either say "je tricotte" or "je fais du tricot", but with "crochet" it's different because the main meanign of the verb (crocheter) is not easily associated to "crochet"
!!
Oh this is a grammar question
usually you say "je verb" but here it's special for "crocheter"
We were talking about the specific vocabulary of doing crochet
it's not incorrect to say "je crochette" but people will think that you break into people homes ahahahha
But this might be the case haha
so i could say ‘je tricotte’ to say i knit, but i cant say ‘je crochet’ to say i crochet?
Yes
To say I crochet you gotta say je fais du crochet
it's just because of the polysémie of "crochetter"
It's not really polysemic, there's only one sense isn't it ?
the activity of crochet (making clothes) and crochetter des serrures (pick locks)
so yeah, 2 meanings
No there's no way you can use crocheter as the crochet activity
Crocheter has only one meaning, which is picking locks
ok wait which french do u both speak
well technically you can
HAHAHAHAHA
it's just to avoid being misunderstood, but it's right to conjugate it
WHICH FRENCH 😭
But the verbe is transitive so you can't just say "je crochète"
You need to explain what you're crocheting
And yeah it's not very used so I guess it's better to use "je fais du crochet"
thats why we say "faire du crochet" so we dont have to specify
r both of u from france
@strong field I think we're good collaborators lol, I'm glad we managed to agree haha
I am
haahhaahhaha
are u alright soup ?
i think we raised more questions than we answered
my man
How about we all forget this discussion 😭
just tryna figure out if one of u is talking about fr canadian bc sometimes stuff can get confusing if ppl use different phrases
😭
No our conclusion is accurate for both Canadian and France French I think
The thing kilou taught me is just a form very few used
@strong field you French or Canadian ?
im in grenoble for my studies sooooo
