What’s the difference between “qu’est-ce qui tu t’appelles” et “comment”? They both ask what your name is, non?

yes, but in french the way to ask names is comment tu t'appelles

qu'est-ce que tu t'appelles is what do you call yourself. yes, BUT in french it is always always HOW do you call yourself, not WHAT

if you ask "why is it 'how' but not 'what'"

the simple answer is french IS NOT english

but it would be used in a very specific context

if, for instance, someone is filling in a form for you, they might ask, "quel est ton nom ?" when entering your last name
