Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

You just have to learn each word's gender, sorry. There are some suffixes that carry gender like the feminine -ité (la curiosité, la nationalité) or the masculine -age (le village, le voisinage) but it's much better to just learn each word individually

To add to this, you find out the gender by looking it up in a dictionary. Each noun in French will be listed with either "nm" or "nf" (nom masculin / nom féminin) next to it

it's just a sense you develop, however it's very difficult for non-native speakers to acquire this sense. Just try to practice and remember the exceptions (like literally everything in french lol)

and for those you fail, don't worry, we think it's very cute when a noun is misgenderer 🙂

It can be cute, until it leads to people not understanding… this is especially the case for nouns that can be either gender but with a change in meaning

If you say le tour when you mean la tour, le manche instead of la manche, or le livre when you means la livre… it can lead to people looking at you quizzically and might take them some time to understand what you meant because it’s so unexpected and causes them to parse the information differently
