Rather, à designates the part or action you look at to figure something out. Like, it shows on said part or action.
We still use this. Like "ça se voit à ta manière de marcher que tu t'es fait mal à la jambe".

Or: J'ai passé une nuit blanche et ça se voit aux cernes sous les yeux.

À + noun/expression isn't really a manner here, so it isn't the equivalent of comment.
