I'm interested in this discussion too because I feel like there is a difference, but I have found it hard to feel confident in my choice as a learner:
- **J'ai pensé qu'il **était important de préparer le dîner - at that moment, I thought that it was good to prepare the dinner, (and then I started preparing it)
- Je pensais qu'il était important de faire du sport - I believed that it was important to do sport (an ongoing believe)
I have tried to find a resource that explains this - Lawless has a page where they describe the different functions of imparfait/passé composé but not for penser

to be fair it still tracks with what I said in that it tries to understand what you put it in and make the best guess based on that, not necessarily to understand what you mean
so if the input itself is not that grammatical, the results won't be either

En plus, la concordance des temps n'est pas bonne parce que la première partie a lieu dans le passé mais la deuxième partie a lieu dans le présent. Ta phrase se traduirait comme : 'I was thought that it looks good (it = looking good) on the most my friends.'
En plus, c'est une traduction trop littérale.
It looks good on him = Il lui va bien (it fits him well)
