Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

The thing to note is that sur/sous are prepositions whereas dessus/dessous are adverbs so the former pair are followed by a noun and the latter pair are not. In your mind, you can see these as on/under and above/below. As an example:

L'ordinateur est sur la table.
(The computer is on the table.)
L'ordinateur est dessus.
(The computer is above.)
Le stylo tombe sous la table.
(The pen falls under the table).
Le stylo tombe dessous.
(The pen falls below.)

Of course, you might say that in English we can say that something is below the table or above the car. In that case, it also works in French but you need a preposition and article. In this usage, the objects are far apart or some place above/below a certain hierarchy.

L'oiseau est au dessus des arbres.
(The bird flies above the trees.)
Le bureau du directeur est à l'étage au dessous de celui-ci.
(The manager's office is on the floor below this one.)

C'est deux manières différentes de dire. Au dessous est plus soutenu que l'autre donc on préfère en dessous
