Clearly you’re right. It’s just a shame that more people don’t take what is a great opportunity to fine-tune their playing / recording techniques, particularly with the effort it takes on the part of mods and mixers to put it together. Even the ‘worst’ albums have more than three bangers to get our teeth into. Either way, I’m sure it’ll end up great - I voted for your bass, it was ideal.

With that, as with the previous two versions, we will be ceremoniously releasing our third album of Green Day covers, spanning the entire Green Day discography with one song from each studio release. For reference, our first and second cover albums were titled God's Favorite Cover Project and Father of All Cover Projects, respectively.

Rules:

  1. Only one suggested title per user. If submissions contain multiple titles, only the first listed will be considered.

Everyone does things a little bit differently but it's all the same process so I'll say what I do as an example the times I've submitted guitar parts

I use an audio interface to run my guitar through an amp sim, some people do that or they use an actual amp with a (quality) microphone

#

And use that setup to record guitar tracks, like rhythm guitar (usually double tracked, left and right channel etc.), lead guitar tracks, all depending on what's in the song

#

Recorded with software like reaper or another DAW

#

To "submit" your recordings you basically mix the tracks into one audio file so people can listen to it all together since it's multitracked, and package that in a google drive fodler along with the raw stem files of the tracks to send to me

#

For more specifics on how recording instruments works and multitrack recordings and all that that would take some more in depth reading on your part if you're interested because it's kind of a lot to explain and a lot is up to preference and trial and error

#

But that's the overall process for guitar or bass (which is usually one track), with vocals of course there's no amp you just need a microphone and a room without too much reverb to record in, drums are a whole thing on their own though really

If several people agree that they need more time to vote and that discourages them then it can be extended to 3 days, I wouldn't do 4. I understand people have busy lives, so do I, but IMO full 48 hours is already a lot for what amounts to usually 30-45 minutes of audio. When we already have to do things like extend submission deadlines sometimes, I want to keep the ball rolling as much as we can

People are welcome to share criticisms of the process or organization of the cover project they might have, and we have the feedback thread for talking about all the submissions whether they won or not, but let's not make this a place to talk about how we're upset we lost. This project wouldn't happen without the time and effort of people who record and submit even when they know they probably won't make it onto the final cover, so even if you didn't get chosen you're still a contributor and I hope people can be proud of that.

IMO a new studio album release warrants that, we did it with FOAM too, not so much for an anniversary edition. We'll get through the studio albums and then do one or two bonuses after that, whether it's some demo track or just a non-album track. There's also dookie 30 stuff to consider so overall that's just something I wanna put off to not lose focus

On average, one of our albums (full run-through of one track from each studio album) takes about a year and a half, give or take, from what I've seen. When I joined in January of 2023, they were just about finished with Graffitia, which was the second to last song in the previous covers album. Then a bit of a hiatus, a couple of Saviors covers, and a run-through of a song from each album up to Warning, and here we are. If I'm correct, song votes are usually up for 48 hours, submissions are usually open for 2 weeks (sometimes with an extension), submission votes are usually up 48 hours, and mixing takes about 2-3 weeks, so you're looking at a month to a month and a half from start to finish on each song.

Mixer rotation isn’t currently changing, we’d make a change to it basically if one of the current ones dropped out. After that we’d go through an audition process. Basically the mixer rotation is fixed right now and it could possibly open up once we finish this round of the studio albums, but I can’t say for certain and that’s to be determined later.

At the rate we are doing covers, for just the studio albums alone, it would take about 25 years to finish. Even more for non-studio album songs. And this number increases the more songs and albums Green Day puts out.
