Perhaps the last recorded performance of "God Only Knows" by Carl Wilson, recorded August 2, 1997 with The Beach Boys at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, CA. If anyone has any information about a reported August 4th recording that exists, please let me know.

This was recorded in the midst of Carl's battle with lung cancer; by this time he sat o...

I wonder if Brian remembers the weird late 1970s stuff he wrote

#

Like the love you adult/child albums

tidal axle
#

I get around

haughty sleet
#

Whats everyones fav beach boys album

haughty sleet
#

So after listening to smile sessions numerous times, I think it’s not really as happy as the album title suggests

#

I feel like it has a feeling of uneasyness throughout the recordings, but like a weird sense of comfort too if that makes sense?

#

Really some charming parts when Brian uses his lyrics to create his own world but like songs like fire, heroes and villains, surfs up, wind chimes, wonderful. These are all pretty serious mostly sad or unsettling songs

#

And then you get like weird goofy but comforting songs

#

Like vegetables

#

Do you like worms

#

But that’s what makes it a masterpiece imo

haughty sleet
#

But yeahhh

#

I’m so excited tbh

#

I wish they had more goodies in the box set

uncut lantern
#

I have every Beach Boys twofer CD by the way

Whoops, that file didn't embed

I'll convert it to a different file type if you don't want to click on the one I just sent

haughty sleet
#

Damn you do have it all

#

I saw it it’s all good

uncut lantern
#

I might also pick up Still Cruisin' soon

haughty sleet
#

I skipped most of their surf albums tbh

Except uhhhh

uncut lantern

A record store in the city I frequently go to has a second-hand copy no one else seems interested in buying

I have surfer girl on vinyl

That’s like the only early beach boys

I also have the 2-disc version of Pacific Ocean Blue which I sadly don't have a picture of

And bambuu

Still Cruisin' and Summer In Paradise have deliberately been taken out of print after their original releases but CD copies aren't too hard to buy these days

#

It's the vinyl pressings that go for insane prices

#

At least for Summer In Paradise

uncut lantern
#

I'm pretty sure Still Cruisin' actually sold well at the time and there were a lot more vinyl pressed for that album

uncut lantern
uncut lantern
#

They literally disowned them

haughty sleet
#

I thought they thought the same about love you mostly Mike love

uncut lantern

Another completist goal of mine is to eventually obtain a copy of Stars and Stripes Vol 1 but I literally do not care enough for that one

uncut lantern
uncut lantern

Summer In Paradise was so bad that even Mike Love never mentioned it in his autobiography except for the title track

uncut lantern
# haughty sleet Never heard

Summer In Paradise was a terrible Beach Boys album, Stars and Stripes was a terrible album but barely a Beach Boys album

Very true I wonder if it’s complete

@uncut lantern do you agree

Yeah, I agree, Sunflower is a great starting point

Spinning this

I love Friends!

#

Such a wholesome album!

haughty sleet
uncut lantern
#

Wild Honey is also awesome!

haughty sleet
#

Probably my fav from their lo fi era

uncut lantern
#

I really love the way the Beach Boys reinvented themselves from that album onwards with each album evolving further and further, arriving at Holland

#

Then 15 Big Ones released

uncut lantern
haughty sleet
uncut lantern
haughty sleet
#

Then like even with adult/child

uncut lantern
#

Also, a bit off-topic but didn't Al Jardine originally mention M.I.U. album being included in some capacity on the box set when he first teased it last year?

#

But it makes a lot more sense why they ended up excluding it anyways because of how unrelated it was to the "Brian's Back" era

uncut lantern
#

Here's hoping the MIU/Light Album/KTSA box set comes out soon

haughty sleet
#

Im surprised Al even put adult child out

uncut lantern
#

Yeah, but I guess the Beach Boys archivists had to step in to make sure all the fans are happy

#

Also, I believe Al is a lot more chill with releasing this kind of stuff now so I doubt he actually minds

#

And if they actually listened to Mike's opinions, nothing would ever be released

haughty sleet
#

Good points for real

fringe mantle
#

God this is the worst case of Beatles syndrome I've ever seen with Surfer Girl

#

I see why they changed their sound

haughty sleet
fringe mantle
#

Ik, I just mean a revolutionary band being SO influential that it makes their music seem generic

#

I'm picking up good posts in this thread

#

tbh i havent listened to too much by them but i would have to rank the ones i have

junior kindle
#

I only know their really popular songs

hot umbra
#

1: Pet Sounds (10/10)
2: Smiley Smile (10/10)
3: Wild Honey (9/10)
4: Friends (idk 8-9/10)
I don't know: Smile Sessions first disc (kind of felt underwhelming on the first listen but im listening to it tomorrow to change my opinions)

hot umbra
#

the lo-fi trilogy is also pretty wild

#

smiley smile is demented and lo-fi besides the 2 hits, heroes and villains and good vibrations

junior kindle
hot umbra
#

wild honey is vaguely psychedelic r&b and it has a stevie wonder cover so its automatically good

hot umbra

its only 38 minutes long, though

by swans or the clash standards thats short

I’ve only heard like good vibrations and surfin USA

nvm I’ve heard all summer long

that + the early surf albums turned me off of them until like a week ago

Good Vibrations changed the way I listen and process music

hot umbra

like 50 minutes of songs built in the same way as GV

median dome
#

Oh yeah, once I listened to GV I dived right into the smile sessions

#

Two years later, here I am with a large beach boys collection in records, including the smile sessions

#

Parks' Song Cycle I also listened too, and enjoy that

#

my go-to vision of smile that was created, it's a good compromise in an LP length

Many people have created their own personal visions and versions of what 'SMiLE', the infamous Beach Boys album that never was (until 2011, but that's more of a compilation than an actual album), may have looked like. This in no way is the 'official' SMiLE, but it is what I think would've made for the best listening experience.

The final result...

Smile (sometimes stylized as SMiLE) is an unfinished album by the American rock band the Beach Boys that was planned to follow their 11th studio album Pet Sounds (1966). It was to be a 12-track LP that drew from over 50 hours of interchangeable sound fragments, similar to the group's 1966 single "Good Vibrations". Instead, after a year of recor...

although there's only really 3-5 songs on the smile sessions that work on their own

for the most part it's meant to be experienced in full

#

ngl I find TWGMTR alright

#

it's the best since Love You

#

And Smile, oh man.

#

You could write a whole music course on just the development of that. Would it have surpassed Sgt. Pepper in terms of cultural influence and music direction? The world may never know.

#

Good Vibrations, I consider to be their best single. Followed with Surf's Up, then God Only Knows (b-side)

#

Speaking on their other music, here's a fun fact. There's a BB song that was partly written (but not credited) to Charles Manson

hot umbra
#

despite sgt pepper being the only coherent and consistent beatles album smile is probably the most advanced album ever made

median dome
#

It had a lot going for it

#

The circumstances leading to its collapse will always be a music tragedy

hot umbra
#

at least it was released in some form later

#

(smile sessions is my 5th favorite album of all time)

median dome
#

I do feel that back in '67 he should've envisioned it as a double LP

hot umbra
#

he couldnt even make it one

median dome
#

Mhm, but I feel a little bit could've been eased if he had thought of that

#

Considering what all he wanted to do

#

While Parks wasn't involved with The Elements, that would've been an interesting suite

#

Smile I consider one of my favorite listens, but I try not to call it an album

#

Brian Wilson Presents Smile is also a good listen, but the 66-71 recordings are better imo
