This Friday, the New York Liberty is collaborating with the Lesbian Herstory Archives for a special archival exhibit at Barclays Center during the team's annual Pride game. But the league's celebration of its queer fans wasn't always this simple or obvious. In fact, in those first few years of the WNBA, queer fans — specifically lesbians — h...

Just an AT stat: 3rd player in league history to have back to back triple doubles. The first two are also AT
Female players in the league have been targeted for racist and sexist attacks in the wake of the sport’s growing popularity thanks to young stars like Caitlin Clark
The WNBA kicked off its 29th season this weekend, and the racism and misogyny quickly followed.
The Clark–Reese rivalry or Reese–Clark rivalry is a media-based rivalry between basketball players Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, which, for pundits and fans, began in the 2023 NCAA championship game in which Reese made a taunting gesture to Clark. In that game, Reese (15 points, 10 rebounds) with the LSU Tigers defeated Clark (30 points, 2 ...
She did this with TWO TORN LABRUMS.
“Last year, you made a powerful statement saying the reason people are watching women’s basketball is not just because of one player but because of you, too. A year later, do you feel like…” the reporter wasn’t allowed to complete. “Next question,” Reese interrupted.
Will sit down and read these in a bit
I can't believe there's a whole ass Wikipedia page about it
It’s a pretty well-followed rivalry that has been misinterpreted, as we know, by the media, fans, and public. The Wiki article is great at highlighting the importance of considering race when we analyze what we are seeing, and also how we might respond to it. I try to take the side of believing, supporting, and celebrating Black women, regardless of how people outside of the W want to spin things like her rivalry with Caitlyn Clark, and focus more on facts and quotes from them directly. Angel Reese has received a lot of hate for being a passionate and outspoken player, which I admire. She has fire in her that people love.
I misspoke earlier about the NBA not facing racism, which is more inherently apparent, but Black women especially face a lot of struggle while being the backbone of women’s sports. Add being queer on top of that… The WNBA players work hard as fuck, and face a lot more backlash, criticism, and hate than other sporting leagues. Which sucks because it seems the controversies, and ulterior motives even within the establishments they play in, seem to overshadow the highlights of these women athletes.
I was somewhat misinformed as well and shouldn't have been as outspoken about Angel Reece as I was, even if I'm probably still not exactly a fan. Part of that comes from skimming all of the headlines in the media but I am not going to use that as an excuse, it's on me
I haven't been able to sit down and read these articles and the wiki yet but I promise I will
I agree with your take here though
My biggest weakness (I'm allergic and anaphylaxis)
Autocorrect ain't gonna do me any favors with misspelled name
Maybe it's a subconscious thing that I misspelled her name 🥴

My friends invited me out yesterday evening because I've been going through a rough time, so I'm sorry that I didn't get to read these all until now.
All of these articles, and I think especially the last Rolling Stone article, were extremely informative and perspective changing. I was most definitely completely wrong and should not have spoken at all on the topic until I was better informed. Better to be informed late than never, I guess... I hadn't realized just how extreme of an issue this was for the WNBA as I had not followed closely enough especially during this growth period in the past year to year and a half or so, and honestly it is sickening to see the level of hatred and misogyny by men that apparently have nothing better to do. I'm not going to give myself a pass on that either, I was clearly misinformed. The racial divide in how Caitlin Clark is perceived compared to her counterparts and the amplification of negative voices in social media, the shitty fans yelling slurs at games, is also sickening.
I do hope that as the league continues to grow that they are able to rise above these challenges in a healthy way, it seems that the WNBA and each organization need to do more to back their players...or, if not exactly that, something needs to change. The loudest voices are often negative ones and those people will keep yapping until they stop getting attention or it stops being "cool" in a sea of positive voices. I hope the sea of positive voices come soon to drown out the negative ones as the league continues to grow and becomes more and more mainstream.
I also regret and would recant what I said about Reese - her rivalry with Clark is clearly much more dynamic and much more sportsmanlike than a bunch of attention grabbing headlines and hastily written clickbait articles would have suggested. I was misinformed and would consider myself part of the problem.
If these numbers are any indication, the WNBA’s popularity is not slowing down anytime soon.
Before concluding on September 11, the 2025 WNBA regular season is projected to reach an attendance record of 3.15 million fans. ⛹️♀️
In many ways, it feels like the momentum around women’s basketball is still just getting started.

It was the Mercury's first playoff win since the 2021 WNBA Finals. It was the largest loss by the Liberty at home in their playoff history and the Mercury's largest road win when facing playoff elimination.
Game 3 will be Friday in Phoenix at the PHX Center (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2). The Liberty know they have to make changes if they want to advance to the semifinals and continue their title defense.
The Pistons announced that the planned 20th anniversary celebration for the 2006 WNBA champion Detroit Shock, originally scheduled for the March 7 game against the Brooklyn Nets at Little Caesars Arena, has been postponed following the passing of championship team member Kara Braxton on Saturday. A new date will be announced later in 2026 “It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of 2x WNBA Champion Kara Braxton,” the league said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and former teammates at this time.” Braxton tragically lost her life in a car accident in Atlanta at the age of 43. Her career extended beyond Detroit. She also played for the Tulsa Shock, Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty before finishing in 2014. In college with the Georgia Bulldogs, she was namedSEC Freshman of the Year in 2002. Teammates and former organizations remembered her passion and physical style that defined the Shock’s identity under head coach and general manager Bill Laimbeer.
