I take this song to be a desperate plea for a simpler time, one of innocence and ignorance to the world around you. In the first verse, the narrator discusses sinking into their own mind, finding their own sort of happy place where they are devoid of any stress. I certainly relate to this, as I tend to distract myself from my fears about the future by pursuing a number of ultimately pointless, but pleasurable hobbies and interests. The second verse shifts to a theme of lost identity and stolen memories, which particularly hits close to home for me. I feel that maturing into an adult has fundamentally changed who I am, to the point where I no longer recognize my past self or the memories associated with that time. We're expected to forget the past and focus on the future, but I want to just get away from that stress, like the narrator in the song. I want to rediscover what it's like to be a young child without any responsibilities or worries, and keep a part of that with me before those memories fade away for good. The feelings of nostalgia and distraction from your fears and worries are universal, and I really think the song captures those emotions beautifully. Also, in my opinion, Blind Melon is kind of overlooked (barring the success of No Rain), so I thought I would dig a little deeper for this LP and share a bit of a hidden gem from their catalog.

Fun fact- I submitted a song from this same album for the "Album Openers" theme in our original run of this event, so call this a sequel of sorts. This time I can actually sub mxmtoon for the lyrics! Because I love her songwriting so much. In this song, Maia (this artist's real name) describes a certain person who sounds very manipulative, controlling, and just overall toxic. Despite loving this song very VERY much (it's one of my favorite songs of 2019), I will admit that it hits close to home to a certain extent. I don't want to name any names, but there is a particular person in my life who exemplifies alot of the things that Maia describes about this toxic individual. Phrases used in this song that remind me of this person include "empty threats", "childish and immature", "All you want to do is hurt me", etc. This person has gaslighted me and attempted to make me feel lesser than them on countless occasions, and it's very similar to alot of what Maia sings about here. I imagine we've all dealt with a person like this in one way or another, but for me especially, this song really hits DEEP. I will say though, the line "karma's got you high and dry" makes me smile a bit sometimes, because that's what tends to happen to people like this, and they tend to deserve it for all the hurt they've projected onto others.

I can't particularly pinpoint lyrics that I specifically relate to, rather I relate vicariously through this song.
What I mean is, the song itself from the singer of the band is about, "about a person who lives, and leans into, a completely superficial lifestyle, and the destructive aftermath of what doing so brings about, not just in that person’s life, but in the world around them."
People everywhere live these completely fake lives through social media which can be destructive to others in ways such as deliberately spreading misinformation through jokes and memes. The general public is not smart and will use what people say on social media as their method of news and what they believe to be truths.
Why do I vicariously relate to this song and its lyrical content: Because it's happening all around us and we practically can't ignore it. We could ignore it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a greater affect on others if I look away. Has this always been a thing? Of course it has, but these days so aggressive like pedal to the floor firing on all pistons aggressive.
Not to mention AI and it's potentially extreme discourse for society. Not saying "unga bunga AI BAD," but you have to admit that the technology utilizing AI is very scary, and that the future is terrifying.
