1. smali can brick your phone if you update the rom and there's a framework change. By not removing the smali beforehand, it will bootloop on first start. If you don't have twrp, you're screwed. Ask @low atlas all about it

2. You don't need smali for neither espresso no HAL. That technology is already embed into both apps. You only need it under two special cirumstances

a) you want to use multiple instances like pogo + galaxy pogo
b) you have a samsung with A11 and want to fix the gps joystick issues with gpx
