so Gengar is given as a high dps option on all of these infographics but it seems to me that his typing is awefule. The only thing you'd use ghost on is psychics or other ghosts, both of which dark types tank a lot better, and to add insult gengar's poison typing makes it even worse against psychics. So I could bring him in but he'd last 3 seconds

You don't need that many checks normally, you're starting to get into exceptional cases if it runs that high. Usually much fewer. Pokemon isn't a game about guarantees, probability and randomness is a core component of it.
