Keep it on the normal catch screen. Every phone has a setting to prevent the app from closing, basically, remove it from battery optimization and set no restrictions on background processes. I can lock the screen, and Pokémon GO stays in memory. When the cooldown time is over, I just unlock the phone and catch the monster on the catch screen.

it seems that keeping the nest list up to date is too much work for too few people

but they're all very large nests
