There is a in-game "tutorial" every time you mega a Pokémon the 1st time. Furthermore, they have different energy earnings (correlate with candy gains when walking)

As to what I consider good (inexpensive) practices: Don't start best buddy process until you have mega evolved atleast 1 time because you will loose out on mega energy gains if you do. So, ideally, get enough energy to mega 1 time. After that, set as buddy & then enjoy the energy gains from walking and slowly make ur way to max level 3.
