There's a way you can see your tags.
For you to see an alert, you can try to keep discord open in the background. That's one thing.
Two, when you swipe left, you should see a little bell icon if you're on your phone.
If you tap on that, then tap the mentions tab.
You should see anything that's tagged your discord handle there.
Silly discord makes it weird to see them now.

It's not the worst phone to root, it's just got a few extra steps.
You use odin, so long as it's a phone not from the US/Canada.
But...yeah, OnePlus is cake to root.
