(new to platform fighters) I'm not sure why, but my inputs are so bad? I'm 90% sure it's user error because I've tried 3 different controllers now and have similar problems with all of them. I know i have to get accustomed to how the controls work but I'm not sure i understand what I'm doing wrong. Just now I was trying to side attack and just kept dashing. I often feel like I have to mash the input I want to get it to happen. Sometimes inputs queue, and sometimes i do an input and just stand there. It feels like my controller muscle memory from playing other games growing up is butting heads with the input systems for rivals idk. I love the game I'm just getting super frustrated when my inputs don't work like it seems like they should. Thanks for any help!

This is a very common issue with people brand new to platform fighters. In this game, movement is analog; the difference between a walk and dash depends on how far and how quickly you move the left stick. If you do a slower, slight tilt of the stick, you'll get a walk; if you quickly tap the stick, youll get a dash.
If you want to perform a forward tilt attack, you'll need to tilt the stick left or right. If you tap and press Attack at the same time, you will always perform a dash attack, which isn't something you'll always want (believe me, as a fellow Clairen player I know the pain of an accidental dash attack)
This is only a quirk of Forward Tilt (what you called a "side attack"); you will be able to perform Forward Strong or Forward Special out of a dash consistently and without issues.
Similarly, if you're on a platform, you'll probably want to tilt down for Down Tilt attacks, or else if you tap, you risk dropping through that platform before pressing Attack.
If you do want to perform a Forward Tilt quickly from a dash, without risk of Dash Attack-ing, you have a couple options. The options I personally like is crouching mid-dash/run, which completely cancels the dash/run and lets you stand up and FTilt. Or, you can wavedash out of dash/run, which quickly puts you in a standing position to FTilt out of.
@bronze girder Thanks for your help! I'll definitely try implementing what you say. Though I'm really struggling with execution. I'm still learning tech but I don't feel like I'm able to implement even basics well atm. it feels like I'm pressing the right buttons in the right order but the payoff is sporadic. I'm not sure what to do to figure out what exactly I'm doing wrong.
It might help to have a more experienced player look at your inputs and see exactly what your struggle points are. I suspect it might be you're inputting a sequence too quickly, or not quickly enough
If you want to try directly uploading footage of your inputs, I know training mode allows you to turn on an in-game input display
ok! thanks! I'll do that!

@digital gyro one last thing I forgot to mention: You might also want to experiment with your right stick options. Setting it to Attack instead of Strong will enable you to perform Forward Tilts (any Tilt attacks really) without ever touching the left stick. You will still, however, need to watch out for when you're ever dashing/running, as flicking the right stick will still result in a dash attack. In which case, my advice to crouch/wavedash first still applies.
This is presuming ofc that you also already have a Strong button bound
I'll dabble with atack vs strong more because i know it'd be good for me to use attack instead but the muscle memory is strong and i did it for a day and gave up recently. but I'll keep at it because I KNOW I could do way more up tilts if i had it set to atk. tysm! I just installed a controller overlay so its a wip
I can't manage to do this, either of the ways you're describing. I always dash-attack. Is it my controls or sensitivities?
? Any time you press Attack during a dash/run, you'll get a Dash Attack. Are you still dashing afterwards? The whole point of crouching/wavedashing is to get you out of a state of dashing/running; if you still tap the stick forward afterwards, you'll just be dashing again
You'll still need to input a slight tilt forwards, as I described it here.
oh ok, so i'm not capable of doing slight lol
always has been very difficult for me, maybe I should fiddle with sensitivities?
You can. I believe there's a setting called "Left Tap Threshold" or smth of the sort
I'll try some stuff out, then try your directions again
👍
I may also try uploading a video demonstrating these inputs under default settings, to give a better idea
very hastily edited video of what i described above, with input display @crystal plover @digital gyro
tysm!!! I'll definitely work on that! that was super helpful in understanding why I walk randomly when it felt like i was inputting a dash. and I started using my right stick set to atk yesterday and wow it's so hard to change but im excited to get it working for me.
It's worth noting for you guys that as long as you're in some sort of recovery frame you don't actually have to do a slight tilt to get a tilt input. If you for instance do a short hop fair, and then flick the stick all the way up (not a tilt input) during your recovery frames, you won't jump after the recovery and you can just hit A to do an utilt. Like 90% of my tilts are done like this. You can do this during a wavedash as well. My inputs here are at the bottom of the screen.
