IF I had to guess how our current systems render volumentrics, this is how I'd imagine it'd be done:

Second, it determines which points have which density determined from said voxels. The objects and particles directly feed this data to the program.
Then, finally, the density of said material is rendered from the voxel data.

Dude I had one of the coolest dreams ever. I was essentially playing Skyrim, but the graphics were incredible, pretty much built in ENB, plus the map was like a hundred times bigger than the actual game. We were literally like riding horses through this town, probably Ivarstead or Rorikstead, and there were just rows of like six dozen houses in a walled fortress. And Alduin looked like a monster, like Smaug meets the Balrog.

Crazy dream.

I dreamed that I was alone in a room with a door and a strange device. I tried to get out, but the door wouldn't open, so I decided to turn on the device. It was a push-button phone, but with a screen the size of a regular phone. There was only a strange open-world game, but with graphics like the old mario games. I played this game, but a cartoon cat crawled out of the display of the device and broke the floor of the room, after which we began to fall into an endless abyss. Then, I opened my eyes and saw that I was in the exact same room, but this time without that device and without the cartoon cat. I sat in the room for a while, but then a fly appeared in the room, and as soon as I noticed the fly, that white bro from the "Adventure Time" finale burst through the door and called me a simpleton. It was one of the strangest dreams of my life, but I don't regret a second.
