What matters is that you don’t die and the boss does. There are two ways to make this easier: make yourself harder to kill or improve your damage so the boss dies more quickly. Only 3 non-optional bosses are DPS tests though so imo it’s mostly irrelevant for most of the game

There’s tier 1 old ones army, which is the prehardmode version with the dark mage. Tier 2 is post mechanical boss with the ogre. Tier 3 is post golem with Betsy and the other two bosses as mini bosses. It gets more difficult (higher tier) as you progress through the game
