You should make a 3 block wide hellevator with ropes placed from the surface to the underground layer to prevent thorns, past this they won't grow. (thorns can grow up to 6 blocks across and spread biomes so you need to prevent them, using ropes is the easiest method)
If you're making horizontal tunnels it should be 3 wide but vines also spread biomes so to prevent this you can line planter boxes along the roof of the tunnel, this is the easiest option because they're fairly cheap, you can pass through them and you can easily auto-place them since they only place in rows.
If you want to protect the jungle you'd have to make the same vertical hellevator but instead of ropes on one side from the surface to the underground layer you'd also need to place an additional row on the opposite side (where the jungle is) because the jungle also grows thorns which could come into contact with a biome and spread back leading to your jungle becoming corrupted.
Note that walls do not spread corruption so there's no point in removing them and sunflowers are only effective for pre hardmode where biomes only spread via grass.

the bottom row in the image has non corruptible blocks surrounding it so thorns don't intervein showing the max block spread, I did this because there's a misconception that it needs to be 4 wide or more, the row above shows how thorns affect spread and the top shows how to prevent it

up to you, a V shaped corruption/crimson and hallowed will generate upon entering hardmode which will go across your world and hellevators if you placed them in the way, so you'd have to make them on the edges of where the new biomes spawned.

You won’t get the alternate ore type for a tier, it’ll just make more cobalt/Orichalcum/adamantite or titanium

Cobalt is a bit worse than palladium but neither is great, then it’s a bit weird with mythril/Orichalcum and titanium/adamantite. Mythril and adamantite have slightly better raw stats and damage bonuses, Orichalcum and titanium have unique set bonuses that can make them better or worse.

yeah but it doesn't even need ropes because the desert doesn't grow thorns.
if you're protecting a biome from the corruption forest and use ropes, make sure they're higher up so the thorns don't grow over and they only need to be on one side (the side where the corrupted forest is) going from the surface to the underground layer.

Pickaxes can receive mining speed boosts which can make them up to 70% faster and have +1 range, drills have faster base speeds but don’t receive mining speed boosts
so if you use mining speed boosts, pickaxes are better in every way
