Rather late reply, but I recommend actually playing with someone you know. There are plenty of people in #archive-ltp but of my many attempts I have never found a good playthrough from it.
Play with someone you already know or trust, whether they know the game or not. If you can't, just don't. Single player does not ruin the experience at all, simply a matter of 'everything is better with friends'.

The developer sets are pretty much cosmetic only, but if you get one very early on you could end up using the wings, all of them have the same stats (so you know if you get another set).
