Well after beating 3 mechs, I got Death Sickle by accident and used it to kill Duke Fishy with Ichor Flask... so try that if your world is in crimson

Try getting hellstone for the pickaxe ASAP, then go look for some hardmode ores. Break some altars and try containing the corruption / crimson spread from your pylons (if you have any) and especially the jungle, as it is a key biome in your playthrough.

The best weapon you can get really depends on what class you want to go for. Many people might tell you to prepare some things for the summoner class, but really you can choose anything, as most of the gear needed to make it OP is in late hardmode. If you aren't that great at dodging attacks or die way too easily, melee class is a very good option because of its tankiness.
