I recommend getting like good armor before even doing the celestial events. If you want to really beat the cultist without worrying about damage, max health+beetle armor is the way to go

BUT you cannot enter it until you help the old man.

If you go mining early-game with just a Copper Pickaxe, you can find either Gold or Platinum. The world always generates with one and not the other. Don't worry though, the Diamond and Ruby staff do the same damage.

I'd try to box him in with Wood and then make some wood walls for the background of said box, maybe add a couple torches and a table with a chair to make him satisfied, and finally make a 3-block-tall gap on one of the walls for a door. I'd recommend making the box at least 7x10 blocks, just to be safe.
