merchant lives in housing but is in the cavern which is a ways away from the house, if he unloads the area will the merchant come back or does he have to kick the merchant out/make the housing invalid then make it valid again for him to come back?

you can change where you want to house NPC's through the little house icon under your minimap (after you press Escape)
press the house, the merchant portrait, inside the house you want to move him into, and he will move there
If it is night, and you leave the area, he will teleport there.

The enemy called "Star cell" is a big ball that when killed splits into 3 small balls. Those small balls regenerate into big balls. If you just keep killing the big balls but let the small balls regrow, no other enemies will spawn except the star cells.
