but should the star cloak and similar accessories be allowed since they only do damage when I TAKE damage?
(for reference, the damage accessory restrictions are meant to keep me from using stuff like the bone helm or spore sac)

It doesn't give a list of every recipe in the game. You have to start with an item.
Say, you start with a jungle spore, it can tell you how to make a blade of grass.
You can use the keybind on that blade of grass recipe to see what you can make with that, and you'll see night's edge.
You can also do that in reverse.
