say you have 50 defense and an enemy normally deals 200 damage, in master mode you would take 150 damage, if you have a banner for that enemy the damage gets halved immediately, so 100 damage, then defense gets accounted for, so you take 50 damage

its helpful for the hungries and leeches, especially the leeches since each segment takes fire damage, if you have titan potion the hungries get knocked a good ways back and take fire + poison damage if you use flask of poison on their way back to you
