Right now, mine for gold or platinum ore and make an armor set with that.
You'll need a scary sounding number of ore, but you'll get more than enough as you dig.

If your world is infected with the Corruption (Purple evil), you can fight it's boss when you are ready, and use it to get shadow scales and make melee-buffing shadow armor.

A Crimson (Red evil) equivalent exists, but it's armor bonus is just extra life Regen - the defense will still be superior, though.
