Well. There's another option. If you can get some iron/lead, and some wood you can make a reinforced fishing rod.
Use a bug net to catch small critters like insects and worms. For worms, combine them with stars you pick up.
Now, just fish away and all the gear you're looking for will come to you in the form of crates. Make or look for a decent sized water pool for it.

you start with the Peckish buff for 5 minutes upon respawning/entering the world. it does nothing.
when it ends, you get the Hungry buff, which makes you weaker. lasts 5 minutes aswell
after that ends, you start taking damage.
if you eat food, you get the Plenty Satisifed/Well fed/etc buffs, when those end you get Peckish again
although it's a pretty bad system, as it can be very easily countered by rushing some iron and a bug net
so is the dark.
then again it's meant to be a fun seed, not an entire new mode
