That’s usually how I just deal with lava that’s directly under where I’m mining. I like to make hellavators completely straight up and down, no bumps and whatnot

committing to a large build is an endeavour and a half, if you don't feel up to it you can always go for something more cozy, quality over quantity if you will, instead of quality and quantity and 10 hours of your life gone
If you want an idea, you could try making a 2 or 3 valid housing tower using gray blocks, then spice it up with chlorophyte bricks and some living leaf blocks around the sides to look like vines

Explore the world but if you encounter the crimson or corruption then fall back if you dont have armor or good weapons
you are going to spend a lot of time in the caves at the start of the game, dont waste your iron on armor or weapons it is best to leave it in ore form as it is a recipe for the iron skin potion unless you need the iron bars for other items or if you are desperate.Tungsten/silver/gold/platinum ore should be used for armor and good weapons
Also dont torture yourself, play on normal mode. Expert mode is ok if you want a challenge but hardmode is a pain in the ass
