Basically, in addition to minions locking onto whatever you hit with a whip (shown by the reticle that appears on them), you can also right click onto a target while holding a summon weapon, though this does not inflict whip tags or special effects of course.

As for hybrid sets, well, those aren't pure Summoner (hybrid means mixing summon damage with other damage types for optimal damage distribution), but I find that to be considerably safer than trying to take on the Wall up close with Whips.

Just wait a little, use water candle or a enemy increase spawn potion, and they will come. Any enemy killed in the ocean biome will have a chance to drop the map, so there's no need to worry about time of day.
But I would suggest building a big platform (dirt or sand or just a normal wood platform) above the ocean to increase the places for mobs to spawn

For starter game you'll need to find chests
(don't think about throwing anything out, please make chests because anything in this game is useful (they have something often labeled as "material" on the item description))

Go and start digging for ores in caverns / find heart crystals / find cavern chests
(best for pre-boss : gold/platinum (gold's counterpart is platinum so you will find either one of them in your world gen))

Then after digging ores you'll have some "Stone" and "Torches" hopefully to craft a "Furnace"

After that you will need to craft a anvil with the help of iron afterwards you will be able to craft weapons depending on what class you play

Afterwards prep an arena and craft either the KS or the EOC summon
(Or it spawns naturally after consuming crystal hearts which you can find in the caves)

Some side thing you could do would be housing for NPCS and potion farming

(Planting makes potions but you'll need the dryad if you want proper planting (i think EOC dead) to get some planter boxes)

I'm new to Terraria and I really want to play with my girlfriend, so I'm here to learn some beginner tips if anyone has anything to suggest!
I have some prompt questions, if that helps, such as:

What should I do first?
Any places to go to/avoid?
What's the best way to build a house?
What items should I craft and how do I do so?

For your first venture I suggest exploring the surface for natural caves as these will lead to some chests with items as well as some ore to mine up but mostly just for exploration and items.

The jungle is probably best avoided (muddy darker green grass area) and probably the same for crimson/corruption (red/purple color) at least until you are familiar with crafting and have some armour.

Wood armour is a good start while exploring and you will slowly get new gear as you go along

In early game most items are useful in some manor but drop off quickly once you get going. I personally never use items such as the blowpipe or grenades since they dont suit my play style. I recommend at least trying items out once or twice.

I like getting my hands on climbing gear accessory when I can personally as well as a boomerang weapon which can be found in cave chests.

No its not a mod, classes are broken down into melee, ranged, magic, summoning and hybrids. Melee is obvious, swords, axes, yoyo's etc, ranged are bows, guns, throwbacks like grenades. Magic is well... magic, staves, wands, magic books and summoning is where you summon minions to fight for you.

Weapons will state 'melee damage', 'range damage' etc to let you know what type they are. Magic uses mana (blue stars/bar next to your health)

just go with whatever weapons you find

and use the ones you like most

Up to you. Personally, in the early game, I wouldn't bother with classes too much. Use whatever is the best gear you can get your hands on and whatever accessories and armor that can help out.

and taking everything that has "material" when you hover over it to the guide npc

he has a "crafting" option where you can place a material and it shows everything you can make with that item

It's a bit unintuitive.
Mob spawning will pick a random tile to check if a spawn attempt is valid. This tile can be in the air. Backwalls invalidate this check.
If it's valid, it moves down toward the closest tile & tries to spawn the mob there. Backwalls are not checked here.
The shorter answer is: You need a completely walled area between a floor & roof to stop things from spawning.

if you don't have the .bak or .bak2 backups in the worlds folder it will be really hard to recover

they are usually automatically generated

You can, although a better option might be to have multiple characters on the same world. The quest fish stays the same for all players in a given world for that day, and the Angler checks the names of the characters that completed a quest, so if you make multiple characters each with different names, you'll be able to hand in many times more quests in one day.

They count towards the achievement all the same.

Combined with journey mode research & time freezing, makes it very quick to farm the achievement.
