I mean if you check the wiki, there are some biomes and times of day that bosses must be summoned during. If you leave those biomes or time of days then the boss with either leave or become enraged and do a lot more hurt.

Either I 'm understanding something wrong, or using things like a Water Candle and Battle Potion don't do anything unless you're like... doing something that isn't killing enemies
i.e I'm trying to replace walls in my Dungeon with slab tiles so I can get a Spectre Staff, but as soon as I go to break walls, only THEN do enemies start spawning like mad

as in I frequently have to go and get my farming arenas off-screen just to get things to spawn
