First off, its 28% second off for every shot you don't crit you are missing out on double the damage of the weapon, is it really worth that 28% damage increase if you are losing out on lets say 81 damage every few shots?

terraria is super simple when it comes to dps optimization

compared to other games

25% chance to crit

is a 25% increase in overall dps

if you dealt damage for 1 minute, going from 0% crit to 25% crit will on average increase the dmg you deal by 25%

likewise for any crit percentage

100% chance to crit is 100% increase in dps

this is important because crit is the only multiplicative source of increased damage in this game (that I know of)

so 50% increased weapon damage makes you go from 1.0 dmg to 1.5 damage
50% crit chance is another 1.5 multiplier
so 1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25

this is why you want to keep your inc dmg and crit chance equal whenever possible if you wanna optimize your overall dps output

20% increased damage and 90% crit chance does less dps than 50% increased damage and 50% crit chance, btw

as 1.2 x 1.9 = 2.18
