You can hit the slash + projectile, though.

Even then, melee has a ton of effective close range options like Fetid Baghnakhs, Bladetongue, most spears, Starlight, The Horseman's Blade and so on. Even the Solar Eruption deals highest DPS at close range.

like when the best pre mech melee weapon .. is a throwing knife

Fetid isn't really nerfed to the ground, I'd say. It's still the definitive facetanking weapon for Destroyer and Plantera, maybe Prime too. Bladetongue's Ichor projectile has piercing and bouncing, which alongside its modest base damage grants it fairly good close combat capabilities, even though it shouldn't be used as a primary Ichor inflictor. As for spears, there's Gungnir, Mushroom Spear and Chlorophyte Partisan, though the latter's projectile has greater range. Daybreak has far greater DPS than Eruption at distance.

Whips that gave speed boosts used to grant this boost to melee weapons, so the Terra Blade's speed could be increased to a ridiculous degree.

Sort of like the post-rework, pre-1.4.4.8 Terra Blade, but arguably even more deadly.

bonking into duke's charges gives you enough iframes to avoid damage regardless of angle

Calamity is wierd

Baseline difficulty being basically expert+, to the point that rage and adrenaline dont even function until you enable revengance feels wierd. Dying a lot to random cave gremlins that deal 50-80 damage is annoying, but no spawn timer alleviates that annoyance significantly.
