I advise you to choose specific class for your playthrough, it will help you boarden your knowledge of the game as you are not overloaded with information

I find it's better not to worry about classes too much until after you've downed a couple bosses on your first playthrough, since the standard ore armors are classless and the next tier is also classless. Most of your weapons will be from searching chests in different biomes or dropped by enemies or evil artifacts.

Even in runs where I already have a predetermined class, I usually kill ||Eye of Cthulhu|| and ||King Slime|| with whatever I have available.

agreed early game class specific gear doesn't give you much bonuses. The only exception perhabs if you actievely restrict yourself as a summoner or mage than the earliest tiers of their armor are actually quite decent boosts.
But a newbie should not restrict himself by class in pre hardmode in my opinion.

just recently got back to playing and had to ask: Glass walls do allow trees and Gem trees to grow, right?

if memory serves, I think I once made a tree farm with glass walls behind it, but now I'm no longer sure since all wiki says is "don't put a wall behind the tile occupied by the sapling", for gem trees especially. maybe I just forgot this fact and my walled farms in the past followed this advice.

Best way to start is to dig down, explore the caves, find chests, hearts, ores, and other materials and build some houses. Once you have 4 NPCs, enough defense, and enough health some events and bosses can spawn.

If you save and exit the world then open it again you will be at spawn

Another good way to start is just walk the surface looking for chests, can get some helpful equipment along the way and get the lay of the land, ie where is the evil biome, (Purple place, or Red place lol) jungle, dungeon, snow biome etc.
