You start out with melee. You are only allowed to use melee weapons up until and including beating the first boss. Once you do, you have to change combat style, of your choosing. If you for example go with ranged, you must only use ranged and must beat the next boss with it where you will change to magic/summoner. Once you've killed 3 bosses, the cycle repeats and you must follow the order you started with.

Chasing the Twins to get in Exca range while they harass you with projectiles and sap away your health with Cursed Inferno, is not fun.

To even get the stuff for a workbench, you have to kill enough slimes for potions to turn the bottles into glass and sand, or you have to get two magic mirrors from mimics.

It's all for 40 sand to make a desert to get cactus.

And then you have to wait for the cactus to grow.
