Even then, it's not really a system that I want to keep running all the time. The point of it is that enemies keep opening the doors at night, and the only way to keep them closed would to be to keep firing darts, over and over, to close them any time they open.

That sounds hazardous to me and any npcs that get too close.

that error is unusual and is usually associated with Tmod loader, I can't find any example of it happening in launch of the game and certainly I can't find any fixes for it. if you really are playing regular terraria then for that specific error I would recommend trying to verify game files through steam or reinstall the game
