Well for starters your biggest goal is exploring in every direction, most importantly down. You will want to find as many ores, chests, and hearts as you can.
As you find stuff in the early game certain things will happen that naturally progress the early game. If you build homes with background walls, a door, a chair, a table, and a light NPCs will will move in after various milestones are met or you randomly find them. Like finding and using a Heart or having 50 silver.
Once you have 10 defense, 200 HP, and 3 NPCs the first boss of the game has a chance to spawn at night.
