You need to craft the Pumpkin Moon Medallion, which consist of 30 pumpkins (seeds can be bought from dryad), then 5 ectoplasm (which can be obtained in the dungeon after plantera is defeated), lastly you need 10 hallowed bars from any of the mechanicals bosses. Combine that together at a hardmode anvil to get the summon item for the event. Also, the even has important drops.

Well at the start of hard mode you take your hammer from the wall of flesh and smash the alters in your evil biomes. You then once again go digging for ores and materials. Make new armors and weapons and get ready for fighting the mech bosses or queen slime.

You could also fight the wall of flesh a few more times for weapons and accessories, the weapons probably will be quickly replaced
